HOW TO GREEN YOUR EASTER/PASSOVER

Try these tips to green your Easter/Passover for a more eco-friendly celebration…

Natural Decor

Use potted herbs/succulents, daffodils or tulips, and small branches from your own backyard to provide an environmentally friendly and cost effective natural decor.  Shop at local florists or greenhouses to keep your money in the economy and reduce the need for long-distance trucking or shipping.

“Green” Eggs

Free-run, free-range and organic eggs aren’t necessarily healthier, say the Manitoba Egg Producers, but they “reduce the environmental footprint” by lowering production emissions and using less land, water, and energy.  Select white, organic eggs, since they’re as nutritious as brown ones but easier to dye.  Use for your baked goods and table decorations as well.  Enjoy visiting a local farm or farmers market for fresh eggs – and be sure to ask if you’re buying organic.

Boil your eggs in water, vinegar, and natural dyes instead of petroleum-based ones. Red beets, yellow turmeric, spinach, raspberries, grape juice, and blueberries are all ingredients you may already have.  The key seems to be simmering the eggs in a big pot of the veggies, fruit, or spices for about an hour.  Some also recommend adding a small amount of vinegar near the end.  Curbly DIY has a really fun and easy to follow instructional video on how to create your own organic dye.  If not feeling up for DIY creations, look for natural dye kits like Earth Paint Natural Egg Dyes at your local grocery store.

Easter/Gift Baskets

Umbrellas, storage cubes, toy dump trucks or beach bags are eco-friendly alternatives to traditional “baskets”. Anything you already have on hand or can use later is much easier on the environment and your wallet!

Dinner

Lower the heat before the guests arrive (bodies create warmth) and open blinds/curtains to enjoy natural light.

Reusable plates and tableware can be purchased in bulk at discount or buy resale and mix and match for a more interesting table setting.

If you’re using disposable dishes, avoid plastic, styrofoam and certain paper products (coated with petroleum-based wax).  Compostable, disposable brands such as USA based, Earth’s Natural Alternative are great options and available online.

Dessert

“Buy fair trade, organic chocolate because regular chocolate production is notorious for child slave labor, pesticide use, and giving less back to the communities and families that farm cocoa,” says biologist Patrick Walshe.  Search for local, organic chocolate in your area if possible or order brands such as Little Secrets chocolate candies (available in sea salt peanut, dark chocolate, toasted coconut, peanut butter, and sea salt almond) or Divine Easter egg variety packs and kits available online and at grocery stores nation-wide.

Use these eco-friendly alternatives to green your Easter/Passover and celebrate the planet too.
