In Europe, over 1,300 ingredients used in cosmetics have been banned by the European Union, while in the United States, the Federal Drug Administration has banned just 10 ingredients to date. The United States cosmetics industry has not seen regulation since the 1930’s when rat poison was being used as an ingredient in mascara, causing women to go blind.
Clear, Honest Labeling
Clear, honest labeling is essential as “60% of what you put on your skin ends up in your body”. The unsafe chemicals in cosmetics are compromising our health and this would create a clean beauty legal standard.
The petition demands clear, transparent labeling of beauty products in the USA so consumers can make healthy and informed decisions. It calls for stricter legislation to monitor the cosmetic industry to protect the health of customers and the integrity of products. Many products are labeled as organic, all natural or green with little or no evidence to back up the claim.
Clean Beauty Standard
Specifically, the petition asks law makers to make cosmetics safe by creating a Clean Beauty Standard that will protect consumers against harsh chemicals, beginning with required ingredient transparency. This means clear and accountable labeling of all cosmetic products.
